Switzerland runs three climates at once, which is why no single month wins. On MeteoSwiss's 1991 to 2020 normals, Zurich averages 1.0 degrees C in January and 19.2 in July; Lugano, south of the Alps, averages 3.8 and 22.6; Davos, at 1,594 metres, averages minus 4.7 and 12.8. Skiing follows operator windows, not a national season: the Jungfrau region runs 21 November 2026 to 25 April 2027, the Engadin opens in waves from late October, and Zermatt markets skiing 365 days a year on its glacier, a claim it had to suspend in the heat of summer 2026. Hut-served hiking runs about mid-June to mid-October. And the calendar's anchors are dated: Basel Fasnacht 15 to 17 February 2027, Art Basel 17 to 20 June 2027, Montreux Jazz 2 to 17 July 2027.
The previous version of this article answered with percentages nobody published. Its search description claimed "75% of travelers rate shoulder months the best weather-price mix"; its body priced shoulder-season hotel savings at 15 to 25 percent, peak occupancy above 90 percent, lift queues shrinking by up to 40 percent and lift discounts up to 30 percent, none of it sourced to any authority, because no Swiss authority publishes figures like these. It described the Swiss Travel Pass as unlimited access to mountain railways with an "early-bird" discount saving up to CHF 50 on a 3-day pass; no early-bird product exists, and mountain railways are mostly discounted, not free, as the pass section below sets out in the official numbers. It placed Art Basel in late May; the fair is in June. And it described an SBB "Super Saver" scheme released on Tuesdays that appears in no SBB publication. What follows is rebuilt from MeteoSwiss, the lift operators, the Swiss Travel System and the festival organizers.
One country, three climates (MeteoSwiss normals)
| Station (zone) | January mean | July mean |
|---|---|---|
| Zurich/Affoltern, 444 m (Plateau) | 1.0 °C | 19.2 °C |
| Lugano, 273 m (south of the Alps) | 3.8 °C | 22.6 °C |
| Davos, 1,594 m (high Alps) | -4.7 °C | 12.8 °C |
These are MeteoSwiss station means for the reference period 1991 to 2020, and the spread between them is the whole timing problem in one table: on a January day, Davos is on average 8.5 degrees colder than Lugano; in July, Lugano is nearly 10 degrees warmer than Davos. The federal climate service, the NCCS, puts the south in one sentence: Mediterranean influence on the southern side of the Alps "ensures mild winters and warm, humid summers", with temperatures "several degrees Celsius higher than for the rest of Switzerland", and Ticino earning its nickname as the country's sunny balcony. Switzerland Tourism's own climate summary agrees in ranges: daytime temperatures of 18 to 28 °C from July to August, minus 2 to 7 °C in January and February, and 8 to 15 °C across spring and autumn. The same page carries the correction every winter guide needs: snow and freezing temperatures are "no longer the rule, especially in the lowlands", and "many ski resorts could hardly survive without artificial snow". Timing in Switzerland is therefore two decisions, not one: which altitude, and which side of the Alps.
Winter: ski seasons are operator windows
There is no Swiss ski season, only dozens of operator calendars, and they do not align. The Jungfrau Ski Region publishes a season window of 21 November 2026 to 25 April 2027, and immediately qualifies it in its own words: the start "depends on snow and weather conditions" and until the end of November it expects to run "exclusively or partially on weekends". Inside the region, Grindelwald-First runs shortest (19 December 2026 to 29 March 2027) and Mürren-Schilthorn longest (to 2 May 2027). The Engadin opens in waves: glacier skiing on the Diavolezza on autumn weekends from 24 October to 15 November 2026, Corvatsch from 21 November, Corviglia above St. Moritz from 28 November, the full area only from 19 December, with the main areas closing 4 April 2027 and Corvatsch and the Diavolezza running to late April and 2 May. Zermatt is the famous exception that proves the rule: Zermatt Bergbahnen markets "skiing and snowboarding 365 days a year" on the Theodul Glacier, and in the exceptional heat of late July 2026 it suspended guest summer skiing on that glacier, as it had from late July to September 2022, keeping only limited training slopes. Print the 365-day claim with that fact attached and it is true; print it alone and it is marketing. Winter's cultural anchor is not alpine at all: Basel Fasnacht, the carnival Basel Tourism describes as beginning at 4.00 am on the Monday after Ash Wednesday and lasting exactly 72 hours, which by that rule opens with the Morgenstreich on Monday 15 February 2027.
Summer: the hut season and the festival stack
High hiking in Switzerland has an official-shaped window, and Switzerland Tourism states it through the huts: about 120 SAC huts are wardened "from approx. mid-June until mid-October", with around 70 huts fully or partly operated in winter and spring, and an instruction to always check opening times in advance. Below the hut line, summer is also the lake and city season, warmest in Ticino on the normals above. The festival calendar stacks into the same weeks. The Montreux Jazz Festival, whose 60th edition ran 3 to 18 July 2026, has published its 61st for 2 to 17 July 2027. August belongs to two organizers' dates: the Locarno Film Festival's 80th edition runs 4 to 14 August 2027, and Zurich's Street Parade is published for Saturday 14 August 2027, its standing second-Saturday slot. Two practical consequences follow from dates alone: lake towns and festival cities book out around these windows, and anyone allergic to crowds should treat the first half of July on Lake Geneva and mid-August in Zurich and Locarno as the peak of the peak. For the slower version of the same country, our guide to beautiful villages in Switzerland covers the valleys the festivals pass over.
The between seasons, honestly
Shoulder season is where the old article's invented percentages did their damage, so here is the evidenced version. Switzerland Tourism publishes no sentence promising quiet hotels and open lifts in spring and autumn; what exists is the operators' own calendars, and they show real gaps. On Corvatsch, summer operation ends 22 October and winter begins 21 November, and winter ends 25 April with summer not resuming until 19 June, so that mountain has no lift service for about a month in late autumn and about eight weeks in spring. The Jungfrau region's winter window shuts on 25 April 2027 and its November start is snow-dependent and part-time. What the between seasons genuinely offer, on the published evidence, is this: the cities, lakes and rail network run all year; spring and autumn daytime temperatures sit in Switzerland Tourism's 8 to 15 °C band, mild on the Plateau and warm in Ticino; the SAC huts are shut or unwardened at altitude, so high routes are a summer product; and the lowlands, vineyards and lake towns are at their emptiest precisely when the mountain infrastructure is dark. Go then for cities, lakes, trains and low walks, not for a discounted version of August in the high Alps, because that product does not exist in those weeks.
Art Basel is in June
One correction deserves its own heading because the old article built an itinerary around it. Art Basel is not a late-May event. The organizer's own release records the 2026 fair at Messe Basel from 18 to 21 June 2026, with invitation-only Preview Days on 16 and 17 June, and dates the 2027 edition from 17 to 20 June 2027, with Preview Days on 15 and 16 June. The structure is constant: two preview days, then four public days. A trip planned for "Art Basel in May" would have missed the fair by a month in either year, which is why this guide now takes every festival date from the organizer's current publication, as the calendar sections above do.
The Swiss Travel Pass, in the official numbers
The pass is genuinely useful and genuinely misdescribed, usually in the direction of promising more than it gives. From SBB and the Swiss Travel System's official validity pages: the Swiss Travel Pass gives unlimited travel by train, bus and boat across the validity network, including public transport in over 90 towns and cities and the premium panoramic trains, though on those trains seat reservations and supplements are charged separately (the Glacier Express and Bernina Express among them). Mountain railways are the correction: exactly three mountains are fully included with unlimited travel, Mount Rigi, Stanserhorn and Stoos. Most other mountain railways and cable cars are discounted, usually by 50 percent (Pilatus, Gornergrat, Schilthorn and Titlis among the named 50 percent cases), and the Jungfraujoch is the exception at a 25 percent discount. The pass also acts as the Swiss Museum Pass, with free admission to more than 500 museums. Prices, from the official table checked in October 2026 and presented by SBB as valid to 31 December 2026, second class: 3 days CHF 254, 4 days CHF 309, 6 days CHF 399, 8 days CHF 439, 15 days CHF 499 (under-25s pay 30 percent less, per SBB). No 2027 table has been published yet. Eligibility: residents of Switzerland and Liechtenstein cannot buy it. And the early-bird verdict, since the old article invented one: there is no early-bird discount. The pass can be bought up to 11 months ahead at the same fixed prices; the only genuine promotion the system runs is a seasonal free-extra-days campaign through authorized sellers, which adds days rather than cutting price, excludes the 3-day pass, and runs in short windows, the 2026 window having closed on 30 September. Anyone selling you an expiring early-bird saving on this pass is selling you a story.
