Water Activities
A felucca sail is the simplest water activity in Egypt: a quiet wooden sailboat ride on the Nile, best at sunset. In Aswan, direct hire costs about $15-$30 per boat for 1-3 hours, while an organised sunset sail costs about $15-$22.50 per person, up to about $36-$75 with a private guide.
The Red Sea suits every level, from a first snorkel to a technical wreck dive. Sea water runs 25-30C from April to November and 21-23C in winter, with the best visibility from September to November. A Giftun Island day boat from Hurghada costs about $15-$38 per person, plus about a $5 reserve fee. Ras Mohammed, Egypt's first national park since 1983, covers about 480 sq km with 220-plus coral species and 1,000-plus fish species; a snorkel boat costs about $28-$60 per person and an intro dive about $57-$68, with a park fee of about 10 EUR or $10 in cash. Elphinstone Reef is for advanced divers only: Advanced Open Water plus about 50 logged dives, with a two-dive trip at about $75 per person. The Blue Hole near Dahab is a sinkhole over 100m deep; its Arch tunnel is technical diving only, and the Bells route needs Advanced certification plus about 15 logged dives. The Thistlegorm wreck, built in 1940 and sunk on 6 October 1941, sits at 16-32m and needs Advanced certification at minimum.
Desert Activities
White Desert camping is the classic desert overnight: a 2-day, 1-night trip from Cairo to Bahariya Oasis, about 5-6 hours by road each way, taking in the Black Desert, Crystal Mountain, and Agabat Valley. Trips cost about $160-$370 per person, with a park fee often extra.
Siwa Oasis is the far desert trip, about 8-10 hours from Cairo by private 4x4, or by bus to Marsa Matruh plus a taxi of about 4 hours. Cleopatra Spring, Shali Fortress, the Oracle Temple, and the Mountain of the Dead fill two full days. A 4-day, 3-night private trip from Cairo is listed from about $599 per person.
Fayoum and Wadi Al Hitan suit a Cairo day trip with a fossil twist. Wadi Al Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005, about 150 km southwest of Cairo, where a fossil trail passes whale skeletons, the largest about 21m long. The day trip takes 10-12 hours, and private trips cost about $60-$250 per person. See the UNESCO case study on Wadi Al-Hitan before you book.
Air Activities in Egypt
A hot-air balloon flight over Luxor is the one air activity worth planning around. Flights run at sunrise, with pickup at 3:30-4:30 AM, a flight of 45-60 minutes, and 3-4 hours in total. A shared flight costs $40-$180 per person, with most listings near $75-$120, and private flights cost $200-$400 or more. Flights are regulated by the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority, but Luxor has a real accident history, including the 26 February 2013 fatal fire that killed 19 people. The accident history for ballooning in Luxor is worth reading before you decide.
Culture and Evening Activities in Egypt
A Tanoura show is the best evening show in Cairo. The Sufi-inspired spinning dance runs at Wekalet El Ghouri, a Mamluk-era caravanserai in Islamic Cairo, on Saturday, Monday, and Wednesday in the most repeated pattern. Doors open about 6:30 PM and the show starts about 8:30 PM, per local guides.
A Sound and Light show is worth one evening if you like narration with the monuments lit up. Book only through the official site, soundandlight.show. The Giza show runs 50-60 minutes, with foreign adult tickets about EGP 350-550 and children about EGP 250-350. Confirm the current schedule on the official Sound and Light site before booking.
Khan el-Khalili is the bazaar quarter to walk in the late afternoon and evening. The market was founded in 1382, per one guide. Work the lanes: Sagha for gold, Nahaseen for brass, Attareen for perfumes. Real papyrus crinkles and does not shine.
Coptic Cairo is a half-day of churches and one museum in Old Cairo, reached by Mar Girgis metro. The Hanging Church sits at the top of 29 steps, with free entry and hours of about 9 AM-4 PM, per one guide. Abu Serga carries the tradition of a Holy Family refuge, and the Ben Ezra Synagogue has 9th-century roots and the Cairo Geniza story.
The Citadel and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali fill 2-3 hours. Saladin built the Citadel in 1176-1183. Hours are 9 AM-5 PM per two guides, or 8 AM-5 PM per others. Check the ticket price before you go. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, and remove shoes in the mosque.
Food Activities in Egypt
Cairo street food is the cheapest activity on this list and one of the most rewarding. Eat koshari, ful medames, taameya (made with fava beans, not chickpeas), hawawshi, shawarma, molokhia, mahshi, fatta, hamam mahshi, sayadeya, and kebda Iskandarani. For sweets, try feteer, om ali, basbousa, konafa, roz bel laban, and qatayef in Ramadan. Eat where vendors are busy and food is cooked on the spot.
One-Day Trip to Alexandria
Alexandria works as a one-day trip from Cairo if you have 4 or more days, and you should skip it on a 2-3 day trip. The city sits about 220 km from Cairo, with a drive of 2.5-3 hours each way. A private guided day trip costs about $79-$149 per person. Run Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Catacombs, the Citadel, and the Corniche in that order.
How to Pick Activities by Trip Length
For a 3-day trip, the things to do in Egypt that pay off most are a felucca sail, one evening show, and one street food evening, all in Cairo and Giza. For a 7-day trip, add the Luxor balloon, one Red Sea snorkelling day, and the White Desert if you can spare two days. Check the best time to visit Egypt before you lock dates.
Booking Tips for Activities in Egypt
Agree the full price before any activity starts, and confirm what is included: meals, guide, transfers, and entry fees. Book the balloon early in your Luxor stay, and keep a buffer day for weather cancellations. Carry dive insurance, above all for liveaboard and southern trips.
